The EuroSonic Festival, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, is Europe's premier showcase for breaking artists from across the continent. Over three days more than 180 European bands will play across 20 stages to industry figures and fans alike. EuroSonic is part of the European Broadcasting System (EBU).

This year Estonia is being represented by the new bands Svjata Vatra and Kirtana Rasa.
They will be performing on the Grand Theatre stage today, 15 January, from 21.30-22.15.

Svjata Vatra is an Estonian-Ukrainian folk band playing in the self-described “firefolk” style. The band’s unique composition includes many different instruments and elements from northern and southern cultures, and their music includes new arrangements of Estonian and Ukrainian folk songs as well as original pieces. http://www.myspace.com/svjatavatra

Kirtana Rasa performs original songs in Estonian, Russian and French. Their music is a mixture of southern warmth, eastern philosophies and northern frost, you can also hear the influences of classical Indian styles. Kirtana Rasa's sound is created using Estonian, African, Indian and Indonesian instruments. http://www.myspace.com/kirtanarasa

Svjata Vatra and Kirtana Rasa are participating in the festival with the support of Tallinn Music Week, Raadio 2, Rada 7 and Jazzkaar. You can follow the bands on their travel blog, http://www.tripsailor.com/blogs/2737-blog-estonia-2-eurosonic/.

The Estonian team arrived at the festival with their very own Viking barge in tow, which is currently located at the centre of the festival, close to the Groningen festival box office and the main club strip. The Viking boat will be the Estonian headquarters for the entire weekend, and some special activities will take place there. Starting at 5 pm each evening the boat’s sail will become a giant message board, onto which received Twitter messages will be projected in real time for the whole world to see. Any messages sent to the specially created Twitter username will be automatically projected onto the Viking barge’s sail to be read by 200 000 festival-goers, 250 EuroSonic bands and over 2 500 leading music industry professionals from around the world. The best Twitter messages will be photographed and posted immediately to the Tallinn Music Week community in Facebook.

Estonian Ambassador to the Netherlands Opened Honorary Consulate in Amsterdam http://www.estemb.nl/frontpage/events/aid-560 Estonian Ambassador to the Netherlands Gita Kalmet opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Amsterdam on Saturday, 19 December. The Estonian honorary consul in Amsterdam is Marcel van den Heuvel.

The ambassador stated that Amsterdam’s popularity among Estonians has grown rapidly and more and more Estonian tourists want to visit the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. “Increasingly more Estonians are studying in Amsterdam’s reputable universities, and the interest in Estonian business circles towards contacts in Amsterdam and the province of North Holland has grown remarkably,” said Ambassador Kalmet. The ambassador noted that opening an honorary consulate in Amsterdam is a logical step for expanding Estonia’s network of honorary consuls, and she expressed hope that the newly opened honorary consulate will join the Estonian Embassy in The Hague as a base for Estonian business diplomacy in the Kingdom of the Netherlands

The service area of the new Estonian Honorary Consulate is the city of Amsterdam and the province of North Holland. The honorary consulate is located at Oude Spiegelstraat 4, 1016 BM Amsterdam, Kingdom of the Netherlands. The honorary consul can be reached by phone at 020 422 6777, fax at 020 422 6775, or email at marcel.vandenheuvel@me.com.

Marcel van den Heuvel was born in 1961. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a degree in history and continued his education at the same university in the law department. Van den Heuvel has worked for the city government of Amsterdam and worked as a consultant and project manager in the Netherlands and in many international projects. The honorary consul has been closely tied to Estonia since 2005, when he became one of the co-owners of Pädaste Manor on the Estonian island of Muhu.

In addition to the honorary consul in Amsterdam, Estonia has three other honorary consuls in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in Rotterdam, Zwolle and the Netherlands Antilles.

Estonia is waiving the visa invitation requirement http://www.estemb.nl/frontpage/events/aid-555 Estonia is simplifying the visa application process for people travelling to Estonia. On May 7 the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) approved an amendment that will waive the visa invitation requirement. The amendment will enter into force on July 30. Visa invitations submitted to and approved by the Citizenship and Migration Board before July 30 will be valid in foreign missions of Estonia as documents certifying the travel purpose within 6 months following the date of the corresponding decision,Waiving the visa invitation requirement means that those applying for visas no longer have to present an invitation approved by the Citizenship and Migration Board or other form of invitation, and from now on other documents will be sufficient to prove the purpose of travel.

The waiving of the invitation requirement will make the visa application process faster and easier. All other requirements will remain as before.

The most important thing for the visa applicant is to present his or her travel plans honestly and clearly and to fill in the visa application with his or her contact information and primary address of residence in Estonia. It is also required to submit documents that certify the purpose of travel and prove the existence of sufficient resources to cover return travel, sustenance and accommodation. It would also be useful for the applicant to indicate his or her connection to Estonia (for example, documents proving marital or family status, or a letter or email written by the person being visited in Estonia describing the person’s connection to the visa applicant).

The consul still reserves the right to ask the visa applicant or relevant individual or organisation to present oral or written explanations of the need for a visa. As before, the consul may request documents that certify the applicant’s intention to leave the Schengen area upon the expiration of the visa: return tickets, sufficient means of subsistence, proof of employment, proof of real estate in the country of residence, proof of ties with the country of residence (family ties, professional status) etc.

To prove the purpose of travel, the following supplementary documents could be submitted (the list is non-exhaustive):

  • For business travel: written confirmation from the company organising the meeting, conference, etc.; invitations/tickets to a fair or seminar; documents that prove the existence of business ties or certify the applicant’s connection to or status in a company.

  • For personal travel: documents confirming accommodation (hotel reservation, a letter or email which confirms that the receiver will allow accommodation for the visa applicant); travel package; copies of travel tickets.

Fingerprints in travel documents http://www.estemb.nl/frontpage/events/aid-554 Starting from June 29th, 2009, all applicants of Estonian travel documents are required to give their fingerprints. The fingerprints are included onto the chip inside the passport cover. Children above the age of 6 are also required to give fingerprints, children below the age of 6 will not have to give fingerprints. As the result of compulsory fingerprint-giving, the procedure of applying for repeated passports by mail will change. In the future, it is possible to apply for a repeated passport by mail only in the case when the person has already received one passport containing fingerprints and less than 2 years have passed since the issuance of this passport.

It is possible to apply for a repeated passport by mail until June 28th, 2009 (passport applications bearing a postal stamp of a later date will not be reviewed without fingerprints - the applicant will have to go to an Estonian foreign representation or to Estonia to give fingerprints). Applications for repeated passports until June 28th, 2009 can be submitted by those persons, whose passport will expire soon (a few months are left until the expiration date) or by persons who for any other reason would like to receive a new passport. There are no changes in the procedure of applying for the initial passport (applications can be turned in at Estonian foreign representations, it is not possible to submit them to the Honorary Consuls). Additional information concerning the fingerprint-taking, use of fingerprints and other questions can be found on the website of the Citizenship and Migration Board.
